Vedic Astrology

Vedic astrology is the traditional Hindu astrology which originated in ancient India and was transcribed in the Vedic scriptures by learned sages. It is also known as ‘Jyotish’, which means the science of light. It is called so because it studies the celestial bodies that reflect their energy and light on earth, hence influencing human lives.

What is astrology?

Astrology is the study of how planets and stars i.e. celestial bodies have an influence on the events that take place in the lives of humans. It is an art, or a kind of divination. Astrologers try to analyze a person’s traits or predict his future through the movements of celestial bodies. As astrology is based on astronomy, it is important that the astrologer knows the exact positions of the stars and planet at a given time to make a particular chart. Through this char, he can make a wide range of conclusions for the moment the chart was cast for. The primary reason for the practice of astrology is to understand ourselves better and know our karma on this earth.

What does ‘Vedic’ mean?

“Vedic”, comes from the word “Veda” in Sanskrit, which means knowledge, broadly. Vedic knowledge doesn’t include only one domain of life. Thus, not only spiritual, but medical, political, technical, cultural, and astrological areas of study are included in the Sanskrit Vedic texts. Although in modern times Vedic culture and Vedic astrology readings were most closely followed in India, historical writings in the Vedic scriptures record an intellectually and spiritually advanced culture going back in human society to over 5,000 to 8,000 years ago. Vedas are a source of deep and profound knowledge which can guide us in every part of our lives.

How is Vedic astrology different from Western astrology?

Western astrology, also called tropical astrology, was devised a few thousand years later than Vedic astrology. It believes that, since the sun is at the center of the solar system, the sun’s relationship with earth is the most vital. Each year, around 22 March, we have a vernal equinox (equal duration of day and night), which marks the beginning of spring. Astrologically, that is the beginning of the year. Vedic astrology focuses on stars. It is more accurate because it considers the tilt in the earth’s axis, which, in layman’s terms, leads to loss of a day after 72 years. The astrological signs must move a day backward at this point to remain accurate.

Why is Vedic astrology more relevant?

When astrology, as a sign, was first developed, astronomy and astrology had the same base. Over the years, that has changed, because Western astrology doesn’t consider the precession of equinoxes, unlike Vedic astrology, and hence has strayed from accuracy by twenty-five days. For example, if a western astrologer says “Venus in Sagittarius”, we cannot see Venus in the group of stars called Sagittarius. In fact, it will be one sign back in Scorpio. However, Vedic astrology remains accurate and can help in much better predictions.

What are the factors influencing Vedic astrology?

There are various factors which help in analyzing planets and stars through Vedic astrology. Some of them are as follows:

  • Planets/Grahas: In Vedic astrology, we use nine planets. The sun and the moon, the true planets: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, and shadow planets i.e. Rahu(the moon’s north node) and Ketu(the moon’s south node). All of these are categorized into benefics or malefics.
  • Houses/Bhavas: The twelve houses are quite similar to their use in Western astrology, but Whole Sign houses are used for most purposes, i.e. the rising sign defines the sign of the first house, and all other houses follow, one sign per house.
  • Signs/Rashis: The signs in Vedic astrology are used similarly to Western except that their primary purpose is to ascertain the strength and ruler of the planet(s) or houses in that sign.

Aspects/Drishti: The Vedic rules for Whole Sign aspects are unique:

  1. All planets aspect both other planets and houses, even if the houses they aspect are empty.
  2. All planets associate with any planets in the same sign.
  3. All planets aspect the opposite house (sign) and any planets in them.
  4. Jupiter aspects planets and houses 5 and 9 away, i.e. the house and planets it is trine to by sign.
  5. Mars aspects planets and houses: 4 ahead (the forward square) and 8 ahead (the backwards inconjunt).
  6. Saturn aspects planets and houses: 4 back (the backwards square) and 3 ahead (the forwards sextile)
  • Nakshatra: Based upon a lunar calendar, where the Moon changes its mansion or Nakshatra once a day, Vedic astrology uses a system of 27 nakshatras for both general and specific purposes.

Not only in a group, but also of a particular individual. It can reveal why someone career takes off, or limps along, if someone will get married or not, and would they have children.
